Repro:

1. Download and install vmware converter

2. Use it to import a physical machine to virtual (simple p2v while running on same computer)

3. Try vmdk2vhd with the newly produced virtual image

You get something like that "Invalid vmdk image...please select another"

 The same image boots fine with vmware free server.

I noticed I get this error if the vmdk file sits on a network drive. If try to convert it from my local C: drive it works fine. We'll sort off. I still get a black screen when I try to turn on the newly converted machine.

I get the same error with a vmdk sitting on my USB drive.

My goal is probalbly like many out there.  Using the VMWare converter with the  Vmdk 2 VHD tool is probably the simplest way to do P2V for MS Virtual Server.

Yeah, we are working on this one. We didn't really know this many folks would use the VMWare P2V on their way to Micorsoft's platform. But is makes a good story.

also doing the same with the p2v and hosting in msvs. Hope to see a remedy for what will be a killer piece of the puzzle for our hobo style conversion matrix.

 

just wanted to post that I am having the same issue... physical to vmware server via converter, but the same error message using this tool.

What version of VMWare converter is everyone using now? We are using the new 39557, and going through this problem at the moment. We aren't able to get any P2V to work to continue testing conversions but we are still trying. We are eager to get this hobo style conversion scenario (as amendoliaa calls it) working.
